Challenges facing the Affiliate Marketing segment?

What are some key problems facing affiliate marketing today (both networks and marketers)? Would like to see if there are any challenges that I could help solve by creating a solution.

The biggest challenge facing the segment is innovation. Everything is exactly the same over the last decade!

  • Coupon sites are still the bulk of the sales channel. Every coupon site is the same with a different design. It's very hard to do anything innovative with a coupon site. Plus the barrier to entry is non existent.
  • Networks are still the same as well.

It's hard to differentiate yourself in this segment.

There is one other pain point though -- sanitization of the networks feeds. All the networks should create an industry standard way of doing merchant feeds and ensure merchants populate their feeds properly. This was a huge pain when I was creating a price comparison engine back in 2002 -- and the issue still exists today in 2014!

  • Agree on coupon sites (aka deal sites - Groupon, AppSumo, etc) using the same idea/concept and not inventing much. Can you give examples of businesses that you refer to as "networks"? – Webbie 11 years ago
  • Networks would be LinkShare, CJ, Shareasale, etc. I'd say Groupon was actually the only "innovation" the coupons segment saw since the late 90s. But even the daily deals segment became stagnant very quickly after Groupon's success. – Nishank Khanna 11 years ago
  • It's still a cash cow segment, but the only way to win or go bust is SEO since the average life time value of users is very low. – Nishank Khanna 11 years ago
  • Thanks for clarifying! – Webbie 11 years ago
