Looking to buy a few chairs for our new office and wondering which chairs are both comfortable for long coding sessions and fairly cost effective at the same time.
I alternate between an Aeron and just standing.
Standing keeps me focused for longer durations, but a "sitting break" is definitely needed every few hours.
You could buy used Aerons on craigslist for a much lower cost than buying new. Jeff Atwood wrote a post listing a few other good chairs.
Saw a post recently about squatting while working -- had a great laugh reading that article (especially the pictures all the way at the end).
The Herman Miller Aeron chair that Nishank mentioned has received a lot of attention from the tech world, including the likes of Joel Spolsky. I have never had a chance to actually use one, but with so much discussion about a chair, I don't think you can ignore it. It's the only chair I've ever heard of where people take to the Internet to brag about it, or where companies list it as a perk or "fringe benefit" of working there on their job postings. It must be good.
Let me humbly submit, though, that one size may not fit all here. Everybody has different needs and ergonomic concerns (height, back problems, etc.). Perhaps rather than going out and buying one type of chair "in bulk", you come up with a specific budget, and let new people pick their own that suits their needs.
This may not be scalable as the company grows to thousands of employees, but it's OK to do things that don't scale in the early days. I don't think this has to be an exception. Giving your new employees this kind of freedom pays you dividends in loyalty and brownie points, and justifies the small overhead.
