Badges and other game dynamics

7

Badges is one of the big items that needs to be built and going on top of the development priority list.

Another suggested dynamic we can explore:

The top 5 experts for the week get a Pro tag next to their name across the entire site. This privilege would get recalculated each week. i.e. If you have Pro tag this week, you'll need to be in the top 5 experts again next week to retain it.

Here's a great little 12-pager on gamification:

Update Feb 11:

Here are some stats of users with karma > 100:

Karma.......Num Users
> 1000..........127
500-1K.........132
100-500........9,712

------

Update Feb 13:

We've almost reached a gamification outline that I'll post here soon to get everyone's approval. Apart from just badges like SE, I think we can innovate in this component to really make the community sticky and add value for contributors.

Update Feb 22:

Pro badge is live. We're working on a much larger gamification plan that will take a little more time to build out. It'll be well worth it :)

  • I've been thinking about the Pro tag, and wanted to share a few thoughts. My initial thought was, "Hey, that could be cool! Bragging rights to all my friends!" As time has gone on though, I've had the thought cross my mind that there's one distinct pitfall to this though: It's mutually exclusive. If I see a good answer by, oh... say... Jay Neely (whose answers have always been really good, btw; I just needed to pick on *somebody*) I might think to myself, "I can't vote for that guy. He's got a lot of points this week already. If he gets more, there's no way I'll get the Pro tag!" ... – rbwhitaker 11 years ago
  • ... and then I'd *not* vote for him, even though he had a good answer. I'd hope that people wouldn't feel this way, but I saw it in myself, just a few minutes ago. Perhaps instead, what might be good is to give people a Pro tag whenever they had X points in the last week. That way it's not mutually exclusive. I can feel free to vote on somebody else without feeling like I'm hurting my own chances of getting the reward. – rbwhitaker 11 years ago
  • That's a great point RB, we didn't think about it from that perspective. I really like your idea about a Pro badge after reading x,xxx points. What do you think about 1K being that point (when one receives a Pro badge). I'm updating this thread with some stats.... Also, we need full editing capability for comments in Roadmap :) These 500 characters aren't going to do. – Nishank Khanna 11 years ago
  • So 1K being the finish line for a Pro tag, that'll be ~260 users who'll have it. – Nishank Khanna 11 years ago
  • I was actually referring to X points in the last week, and that it would go away if you don't maintain it in the next week. (300 points per week or something.) But what you're describing would work too. Indeed, even Stack Exchange had the thing where when you reached a certain number of points, you became an "Established User" and your signature looked fancier. – rbwhitaker 11 years ago
  • Hmm... I see you point about it getting reset every week now. That would be incentive to help the community each week. Love it! – Nishank Khanna 11 years ago
  • Pro badge has been made live with the core gamification elements to follow shortly: http://www.brightjourney.com/roadmap/pro-badgeNishank Khanna 11 years ago
  • One of the gamification items I'd like to see is a breakdown of where my karma's coming from. It's probably the main element I miss from StackExchange. – Jay Neely 10 years ago
  • Another semi-gamification feature that would be great to see is a Quora-like listing of how many views content I've created has gotten: http://www.quora.com/stats - it's highly motivating for regular contributors to see the exposure they're getting. I ended up including the number of pageviews my Quora content had when applying for a role that included a lot of content creation. – Jay Neely 10 years ago
  • Love the idea of personal analytics. Also, I'm coding up the "karma breakdown" feature as I write this. That really was a key missing feature. – Nishank Khanna 10 years ago
  • @Jay Karma breakdown is live. It's the icon right next to the Inbox. More tweaks to this breakdown on the way -- right now it lists all votes you get. Next step will be grouping the votes by the day to remove redundancy. – Nishank Khanna 10 years ago
